Meet Downriver's very best players
PUBLISHED: April 1, 2007
Choosing the best players in the area proved to be tough this
season.
Grosse Ile, Truman, Romulus and Anderson all were division champions
and both Truman and Inter-City advanced to regional finals.
It got so tough, in fact, that we finally settled on eight players.
Meet the 2006-07 News-Herald boys' basketball Dream Team:
Willie Brown, Woodhaven: The junior had a breakout season, earning
all-Michigan Mega Conference White division honors for arguably
the most improved team in the area. Woodhaven more than doubled
its win total from a season ago, finishing 13-8 and coming in third
in the White.
Brown, a shooting guard, averaged 18.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.6
assists and defensively, 2.7 steals.
Dominique Buckley, Romulus: The junior point guard made the Eagles
go this season and dished out a team-best 6.4 assists as Romulus
secured a share of the Mega Red title.
As dangerous a slasher and shooter as passer, he also led the
Eagles in scoring (13.9). Buckley already has committed to Iowa
State University and will be a Class A all-state candidate next
season.
Byron Glenn, Anderson: A four-year starter, Glenn finished his
career with a co-Mega Blue title and led the Titans to the Mega
Blue-Gold tournament championship.
The senior all-Mega Blue swingman improved in all areas of his
game and wasn't just a scorer, averaging 16.5 points, 3.6 assists
and 3.0 steals.
Marcus Knott, Truman: The junior guard led the area in assists
(6.5) and steals (4.4) and kept defenses honest by driving to the
basket when they double-teamed P.J. Reyes.
An all-Mega White selection, Knott joins Buckley and Pugh at the
head of what should be a strong 2007-08 senior class.
Pat McLain, Carlson: A four-year starter for the Marauders, the
senior center had a magnificent year and joined Romulus' Searcy
as the top big men in the area. He helped lead Carlson to its first
Class B district title in nearly 18 years and was named to the
all-Mega Gold team.
McLain averaged 17.8 points and 11.4 boards and finished his career
with 1,001 points.
Lonnie Pugh, Grosse Ile: The junior forward showed how valuable
he was when he didn't play in the Devils' upset loss in a Class
B district semifinal. During Grosse Ile's Huron League championship
season, he led the Devils in scoring (14.9) and rebounding (12.8).
Pugh, the Huron League most valuable player, also finished the
season with Class B honorable mention laurels.
P.J. Reyes, Truman: The senior swingman finished his career averaging
20.3 points and 10.3 rebounds for the Mega Red tri-champions. An
amazing scorer who could take over a game in minutes, he made 50
percent of his field-goal attempts and made a team-best 37 three-pointers
this season.
Reyes, who likely will enroll at a junior college, ended the season
with Class A honorable mention all-state honors.
Devin Searcy, Romulus: The University of Dayton-bound center played
his best in the second half of the season to help Romulus reach
a Class A regional. A strong defender inside, he helped the Eagles
secure a share of the Mega Red title.
The 6-9 senior, who did much of his scoring damage
on the offensive glass, averaged 12.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per
game, as well as 3.2 blocks.

P.J. Reyes,
Taylor Truman: Reyes, a key to Truman's 41 victories the last
two seasons (including a regional final in 2007), averaged 20.3
points, 10.6 rebounds, three steals, 2.2 assists, 2.3 blocks.
He shot 36 percent on 3-pointers and 68 percent on free throws. "He's
a gym rat," coach Chuck Suttles said. "He
has that winning attitude." read

The defensive pressure by Taylor
Truman eventually proved to be too much for the Adrian High School
basketball team to handle.
Led by a big night from Paul Reyes, Truman pulled away in the second half and
recorded a 61-45 victory Tuesday against the Maples in a Class
A regional semifinal at Ypsilanti Lincoln High School.
Reyes, who is being looked at by a few Division I schools, had 15 of his game-high
27 points in the second half to lead the Cougars.
"They really wore us down," Adrian coach Marc Comstock said. "This was a tough game for us because they really could pressure us, and we had way too many turnovers."
As Truman pulled away in the fourth, the Maples couldn't make free throws to stay close. Adrian (11-13) was 4-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final quarter and went 8-for-17 for the game.
"We lost touch with them," Comstock said. "They just got us to play farther from the basket and at a faster pace than we wanted to play."
The Cougars (19-4) pushed their lead to double-digits for the first time in the
final quarter. Carrying an eight-point advantage entering the fourth, Truman
quickly extended its lead to 16 capped by Reyes throwing down back-to-back dunks.
Reyes finished the Maples off with back-to-back 3-pointers with under three minutes
remaining to give Truman a 19-point lead - its largest of the night. read

Truman tops Anderson in district final
By Jon Machota, The News-Herald
PUBLISHED: March 11, 2007
In what has become a reoccurring trend, the Truman basketball
team needed a second-quarter outburst to overcome a sluggish start.
Down by as many as 11 points early in the first half, Truman
used a 15-0 run to close the gap and ultimately defeat Anderson
67-52 on Friday in the class A District Final at Roosevelt.
"We have a tendency to get off to a slow start and that's
exactly what happened," Truman Coach Chuck Suttles said. "Southgate
was ready to put a 20-point blast on us. It was nice to see (our
players) respond."
Byron Glenn's early sharp shooting spearheaded the Anderson (19-4)
attack as he scored nine first-quarter points, giving the underdog
Titans a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In desperate need of a second quarter change-of-pace, Truman (19-3)
shut down the Titans passing lanes and used tight on-the-ball defense
to force eight turnovers. Junior Jones was a key contributor, scoring
six points during that stretch.
"We had to use our speed and (tighten up)
on defense," Jones
said. "Coach told us to make it a track meet and run them
to death." read
