BOYS BASKETBALL:
Lincoln Park rolls past cold-shooting Truman

Devontay Mitchell and Truman rarely had an answer for Marcus Cornett-Tillmon and his Lincoln Park teammates Friday night.

Lincoln Park found its rhythm late in the first half Friday night — just about the same time Truman was falling deeper into one of its worst shooting nights of the season.

The Railsplitters survived one last Truman rally before putting the game away and keeping themselves in the Downriver League title hunt with a 55-41 victory.

“Last week was kind of a wake-up call,” Lincoln Park Coach Todd Tobin said a week after Kennedy knocked the Rails out of a tie for the league lead.

“It seemed like once we got going we were in pretty good shape.”

On a night when nearly everyone was struggling from the floor, Mike Davis found his touch and scored 25 points, including nine during a late streak that put the game away.

The win kept the Rails (12-2, 4-1) a game behind league leaders Melvindale and Kennedy.

Meanwhile, Truman couldn’t seem to make anything — even several layups and second-chance shots near the basket. The Rails further stymied them by rarely allowing more than one shot. read more >

BOYS BASKETBALL:
Late surge gets Truman past Roosevelt

Chris Johnson was just the man Truman needed Friday night.

His three-point play late in the fourth quarter gave the Cougars the lead for good and helped them stay unbeaten in the Downriver League with a 43-38 win at Roosevelt.

Truman puts its perfect league mark on the line Friday when fellow unbeaten Melvindale comes to town.

Johnson finished with 15 points and was 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals.

“He came alive at the right time and he made some critical free throws,” Cougars Coach Chuck Suttles said. “We got ourselves into some predicaments and we were luck to get ourselves out of them.”

Truman led for much of the game but the host Bears took a two-point lead with 55 seconds to play. Enter Johnson, whose basket and free throw turned the tide.

“That was one we probably should’ve won,” Wyandotte Coach Dave Cramton said. “But give Truman credit. They were gritty down the stretch and pulled it out.

“I think we’ll learn something from this.” read more >

FRIDAY NIGHT BASKETBALL:
Melvindale takes down Truman

Javan Thomas (22) and Melvindale got past Truman in a battle of Downriver League unbeatens Friday.

Melvindale had two ready-made excuses in the bag minutes before the start of Friday’s trip to Truman.

Dalvin Paris and DeJohn Randle made sure the Cardinals wouldn’t need them.

The duo combined for 38 points and helped Melvindale upend the Cougars without standout Wayne Pettus and despite the fact Randle barely made the opening tip after returning from a college visit.

“We really had to step it up tonight,” Paris said of himself and Randle. “We were going to have to do a lot more tonight to have a chance to win.”

And they were far from the only reasons the Cardinals (10-2, 4-0 Downriver League) are one of only two remaining unbeatens.read more >

Truman

Cramuel Harlan stated his case to stay in Truman’s starting five on Saturday against Inkster at the Romulus holiday showcase.

In a 51-41 win over the Vikings, the 6-foot-3 Harlan posted a Ben Wallace-esque 14 rebounds, eight blocks, three points and two steals.

“He responded well to starting,” Truman Coach Chuck Suttles said. “He changed so many shots. He had four blocks in the first quarter alone.

“That helped, it gave us a jump start.”

Truman (2-1) burst out to a 15-4 lead over the previ-ously undefeated Vikings (3-1) in the first quarter.

By halftime the Cougars went up 26-13 and 41-24 heading to the fourth quar-ter.

“After the first quarter we got an edge on them,” Sut-tles said. “They played pretty even with us, but they couldn’t make it up.”

Raphael Sanders scored 16 points with nine re-bounds and four steals, while Christian Moon added 13 with 10 rebounds and four steals.

Jamar Brown added nine points and three steals and Deray Kelley had seven points with 13 rebounds and two steals.

“We had a pretty good effort,” Suttles said. “De-fensively we seemed much more in sync. The guys go on the boards well.”
